Hospital Visit

Yesterday we had the pleasure of visiting the Birmingham Childrens Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (largest in Europe) to launch the brilliant new sensory equipment that, thanks to you, we were able to fund for them.

The equipment (costing a total of £10,000)  is a very important part of the recovery process and helps the children enjoy their stay in the unit.

We were able to surprise the children and their families with the appearance of our ambassadors Comedian, Russell Kane and singer, Ritchie Neville who spent time with the children and parents.

Balls to Cancer joins Cancer 52

We are very happy to announce that we have agreed to join Cancer 52 as we believe that ALL cancer sufferers are important and that no one should be over looked.

Cancer52 has grown from an initial group brought together at the request of the National Cancer Director, Mike Richards to input into the Cancer Reform Strategy.

We are so named because 52% of cancer deaths in the UK are from the less common cancers (i.e. excluding the ‘big four’: bowel, breast, lung and prostate), although in 2013 this proportion increased to 54%.

Cancer52 is an alliance of more than 70 organisations working to address the inequalities that exist in policy, services and research into the less common cancers and to improve outcomes for patients with these highly challenging diseases. Most who work for the organisation give their time and resources on a voluntary basis.

Could you raise money for us?

We are looking for volunteers across the UK to arrange fundraising events for us. Could you do it?

We will help you with posters, leaflets and support you while you arrange and advertise your event.

You can do anything runs, karaoke nights, parties, bingo, race nights, football matches etc…. anything at all

So please join us and help us save lives today.

Spreading a little happiness…

We know that there are thousands of cancer sufferers in the UK that could do with a little help or just a simple night out.

So we have decided that that is what we will do.

If you know of anyone who is worthy of a night out or even needs something repairing or replacing, we will do our up most to sort it out for them.

Please share this post with everyone you know, someone you know will need our help.

Doug’s Story

I was diagnosed with breast cancer three days before my 50th birthday, on 12th January 2012. It was a shock because I was unaware that men could suffer from it. I started the blog because I felt that I had to raise awareness that men could get breast cancer too. It has also proved to be therapeutic and has helped me to meet some amazing people.

In the first few weeks of my writing, things got tough, my Mastectomy was cancelled due to being diagnosed as type two diabetic and then I lost my Mum  rather unexpectedly.I was devastated but after some thought, I vowed to continue to write. It was definitely the best thing to do.

My blog is called One of 300 men, because when I was diagnosed, there were only 300 men who were diagnosed. also. Sadly, that number is rising.

Balls to Cancer – About Us

We are Balls to Cancer- a registered charity, and it is our aim to fight cancer with fun!  We are raising funds for male cancer awareness and education. We occasionally donate a proportion to other associated causes and research.

100% of funds raised or donated goes into this charity for our aims below…..

We are spending time and money on a nationwide (and in some cases worldwide) awareness campaign through the media, social networks, leaflets and posters, to try to make both men and women more aware of the dangers of cancer and to help men help themselves. We believe that prevention is the key to beating cancer.

We want to open a male only contact point for men/boys who have been diagnosed with cancer or are worried about cancer and their families. So if you know anyone who needs our help or if you need our help yourselves, please contact us today. We are here to help you so get in touch.

We are funding an education programme for teenagers to help them understand and take away the taboo of talking about testicular cancer and asking for help. We are currently setting this up with our own local authority with the hope of going nationwide next year.

We are also putting aside a small amount of funds for research projects we feel are making headway in their particular field. This funding will also be there to help individuals who need specialist treatment, or support for families affected financially due to treatment.

We have already given money to many research projects and hospitals such as Birmingham, Wolverhampton & Brunel Universities as well as funding special sensory equipment of  The Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

We are also funding two luxury holiday homes at  Haven, Burnham on Sea holiday park for the use of cancer sufferers* and their families, completely free of charge. The idea behind this is for the charity to provide holidays for people/families at an already difficult time.  We are giving well deserved breaks to those that need it, allowing them to create some happy memories.

We have also launched  the Geoff Bates Fund, the fund has been set up to help the families in the UK who are fighting cancer. We have spoken to hundreds of families across the country and their main worry after cancer has hit them is how to cope financially, often when a member of the family is ill someone has to take extended leave from work or give up work all together and this puts extra strain and stress on a family already going through the most terrible time in their lives. The Geoff Bates fund will aim to help families bridge that gap and help them survive. To be able to offer this fund we need your help. We need your donations and fundraising activities.

Our funding comes from you our supporters, who hold fun fundraising events across the country. We need more of you to get involved. Without your help we couldn’t continue to do the vital work we do.

200,000 men are diagnosed a year with cancer in the UK, killing 10 men an hour.

Please help us, please get involved

Thank you
